Upcoming Tour Celebrates ’50 Summers of Love’ With Micky Dolenz, Mark Lindsay
Each week, we present a song, album, movie, book, or event that occurred exactly 50 years ago to the day. Obviously, this year we’re honoring 1967, a year rich with cultural significance, from Sgt. Pepper to Monterey Pop. It contains perhaps one of the most significant golden milestones of the ’60s: the anniversary of the season affectionately known as “the Summer of Love.”
Starting in July, the Monkees’ Micky Dolenz and Paul Revere and the Raiders’ Mark Lindsay will hit the road with world-renowned Beatles tribute band the Fab Four to conjure that magical, musical summer.
For Dolenz, it’s kismet: the summer of ’67 saw the Monkees and the Beatles neck-and-neck atop the Billboard charts as Headquarters sat nobly in the #2 slot right behind Sgt. Pepper. Many would call that gap between seasons of the Monkees’ hit TV show the band’s apex. Monkeemania had already been born, but by mid-1967, it was exploding.
Meanwhile, Paul Revere and the Raiders put three monster singles into the Top 10 in 1966, following them the next year with a #5 smash, “Him Or Me — What’s It Gonna Be?” The band had been kicking around since the early ’60s, but by 1967, they were bonafide teen idols, Mark Lindsay, their colonial, ponytailed frontman.
That summer, the group was Columbia’s top-selling rock group and appeared regularly on Dick Clark’s Where the Action Is, splashing across the pages of virtually every teen magazine. Despite a change in their lineup, Paul Revere and the Raiders’ star burned bright, especially as they made their one and only appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Both of these performers were at the top of their game in ’67, which makes them natural choices for this landmark tour. Joining them is the Fab Four, a Beatles tribute with 20 years of worldwide performances and two Beatles-inspired Christmas albums under their boots. The Los Angeles-based outfit is so popular, in fact, that a second cast once helmed a Vegas residency while the original lineup continued to dominate the tribute-band circuit.
