AJOBO: Win Three Remastered Alvin Lee Reissues!
Do not be afraid. Your regularly scheduled AJOBO has been hijacked by the holiday spirit (or something like that). That’s right — starting today through December, we’ll feature an amazing, exclusive giveaway for prizes that’ll satisfy every music fan on your list (or yourself — we won’t tell!). To enter, simply scroll to the bottom of this entry and follow the directions to win. Plus, as a bonus you’ll get your weekly REBEAT menu. We wouldn’t cheat you out of that, would we?
Our first ever giveaway is a set of three reissues from Alvin Lee, best known as the blazing guitarist of British soul/blues outfit Ten Years After. These remastered releases mark the first time the three albums have been available on CD in over a decade. Each one features not only Lee’s pioneering guitar style that once earned him the moniker of “the fastest guitar player in the west,” but also a host of musical pals who supported him in his solo efforts.
On the Road to Freedom (1973), Lee’s first solo album after leaving Ten Years After, pairs him with vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Mylon LeFevre, and also includes appearances by George Harrison, Steve Winwood, Mick Fleetwood, Ron Wood, and Jim Capaldi. It’s often mentioned as a hidden gem of early country rock.
Meanwhile, In Flight (1974) captures an Alvin Lee & Co. performance at London’s Rainbow, which resulted in the very well-received double live album. The set contains a mix of Lee’s own tunes and rock staples like Elvis Presley’s “Don’t Be Cruel” and Little Richard’s “Keep A-Knockin’,” and was praised by Billboard magazine for its inclusion of “some of the good old rock and roll [Lee] loves so much, with a fine sprinkling of soul and some originals thrown in.”
Finally, Free Fall (1980) finds Lee ten years after (see what I did there?) his appearance at Woodstock as he discovers a smoother sound and debuts the Alvin Lee Band.
A true rock legend in his own right, Alvin Lee sadly passed away in 2013, but remained a huge concert draw and electrifying live performer up until his death.

This Week on REBEAT!
– We’ll talk to a few of those Jersey boys who joined Frankie Valli in the 1970s as part of the Four Seasons, including Gerry Polci, who sang lead on the band’s 1975 hit “December 1963 (Oh, What a Night),” about recording, near-death experiences, and, of course, what Valli’s really like.
– Saturday marks 13 years since we lost George Harrison. Emma Sedam will take us through some highlights of Harrison’s discography and spotlight a few lesser-known masterpieces.
– This week’s reviews run the gamut of British rock royalty, to an album featuring a who’s who of folk music, to a memoir based on one young girl’s diary during the height of Beatlemania. We’ll also chuck in a Thanksgiving-themed Staff Picks, just for good measure!
