AJOBO: The Woman Who’s Blogging From 1965

Well, here we are again at another Beatles Week on REBEAT. And you know that that means: the NY/NJ Fest for Beatles Fans is this weekend! But Allison, you say, wasn’t the LA Fest just yesterday? Sure seems like it. These Fests get closer and closer, I swear.

Unfortunately, I won’t be in attendance this year, but if you’re heading to the Fest, make a point to catch the Women’s Historian Panel at 6:15pm on Saturday evening. Our very own Erika Abrams, who besides her tireless work here at REBEAT also runs the excellent Beatles blog And We Love Them, will a panelist, and Susan Ryan, also a REBEAT contributor, is moderating. Erika will have some REBEAT swag, so make sure you stop by and say hi!

Carol Tyler at 13.

As you gear up to get your Beatle on, check out this great new blog that recently popped up on our radar. Carol Tyler, an Eisner Award-nominated cartoonist, author, and comedian, recently unearthed a journal she kept in the summer of 1965 as her 13-year-old self eagerly awaited the arrival of the Fab Four in the Windy City. Now, she’s adapting her childhood diary and incorporating it with new tales and drawings into a blog. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill nostalgia trip, however; Tyler is actually blogging in first person — from 1965.

The blog, on which posts are left up for two weeks at a time, will carry throughout the summer and wrap on Labor Day. The reason for a deadline? Tyler’s turning her story into a book due out next year. So, until then, enjoy blurbs like Tyler’s reasoning behind adopting Ringo as her favorite (hint: everyone else was taken), her adventures in babysitting, and even newspaper clippings showing off her teenage achievements. And stay tuned to REBEAT for more info on where to get your copy of Carol Tyler’s book in 2016!

This Week on REBEAT!

– Check back throughout the week for a preview of the 2015 NY/NJ Fest for Beatles Fans, as well as daily recaps from Erika Abrams, and other surprises!

– Do you have your green beer ready? We’re starting our St. Patrick’s Day celebration early with a look at some Irish bands you might want to check out. Plus, we’re taking another listen to a classic Clancy Brothers album. Erin au-go-go bragh! (I’m not Irish.)

– If you’re adding to your CD and book collections, keep an eye on our reviews section this week; we’re talking about new reissues and some must-have texts for the guitar players in our midst!
