JUKEBOX: End-of-Summer Love
My local beach closes this weekend, my Facebook feed is full of first day of school photos, and every time I turn on the TV, I see that old Staples ad with the parents singing, “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year.”
Like it or not, summer’s winding down. And what better way for REBEAT to send off our first summer than with a playlist of classic summer love songs?
Did you and your special guy or gal cross everything off your summer bucket list? The Four Preps and the Beach Boys rhapsodize about some of those magical summer moments, from moonlit lakes and midway games, to miniature golf and motorbike rides — not to mention the ever-popular pastime of spilling Coke on blouses.
Maybe your true love went on vacation and left you moping at home like Brian Hyland and Carole King. Sure, he or she promised to stay true, but as the Happenings warn us, “There is danger in the summer moon above.” You know you’ll end the summer with a broken heart, so why even go outside? Stay in your room and gaze moodily out the window until Labor Day.
Or maybe you were someone’s summer fling yourself, and even while Robin Ward is reminiscing about what a wonderful summer she’s had with you, you’re still wondering, just like Freddy Cannon, “What’s gonna happen when the summer’s done?” Will you stay in touch when the school year starts, or will you part with a kiss and spend your winter crying along with your Shangri-Las records? If you forget all about that cute Beach Boy once school starts, will he come back next summer just to break your heart all over again? Or will next winter find you and your love still together, possibly in the Rockies, still remembering the rainy summer days you spent listening to “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”?
Only time will tell. Until then, take a cue from Johnny Rivers and “let tomorrow be.” Fall doesn’t really start until late-September, anyway. Right?
