AJOBO: A Chill In the Air
‘Tis another week at REBEAT, packed with pop culture goodness. Meanwhile, the temperature is steadily dropping here in the Big Apple. Fall is a weird season, especially the first few weeks of it. Because of our walking culture, and the fact that you’re constantly rushing from building to subway, from bus to apartment, no one really gets into the groove of fall until it’s almost over. It makes me chuckle to see folks in t-shirts and shorts next to others bundled up in puffy coats and hats and boots. Also, the weather becomes the hot topic of discussion. Remember when the forecast was just elevator chitchat or awkward small talk? Nah. We New Yorkers love to bemoan whatever falls from the sky; it’s essential.
Do your musical tastes change with the seasons? I think we all have songs or albums that take us back to that one magical summer or fall day, to that place that was so special. Maybe it’s a place that’s disappeared — or was never real to begin with. Fall always has me waxing poetic and nostalgic. I don’t know what it is, but I love my music to reflect that.
Fall also has me missing the warmth of California. Even though it’s been only a week since I was cruising La Brea in my rented Accent (laugh if you must; at least it was an upgrade!), I’m itching for a return. Thankfully, work has kept me sufficiently distracted from my West Coast-longings, and hopefully will until I can find a decent excuse to go back. Although, every time I step out of my apartment and feel that first shocking gust of pre-winter chill, I’m almost tempted to run right back inside and book a plane ticket. Almost.
Anyway, enough complaining! Who needs to go outside anyway, especially when you’ve got all of this to look forward to?
This Week on REBEAT!
– Based in Detroit, the Legal Matters is a band that exemplifies modern pop with a throwback feel. So, we invited them on a trip to Dreamsville by filling out a survey befitting 16, Tiger Beat and all of our RAVER regulars. Carey Farrell plays Gloria Stavers tomorrow.
– Halloween is quickly approaching, which means there’s much to be said about the array of spooktacular tunes from over the years, including the novelty song. Liam Carroll examines the genre, and laments its unfortunate demise.
– Of course, there’s JUKEBOX, Mr. Schneider, reviews, IW50YAT, Staff Picks (guilty pleasure songs — we’ll show you ours if you show us yours!), and more! Stay tuned!
