BC the Beatles — REBEAT’s First Podcast! — Talks Paul McCartney’s ‘Egypt Station,’ ‘Thrillington,’ and More in Premiere Episode
Over the past four years, we’ve loved bringing you reviews, features, and interviews with some of our favorite people that embody the spirit of what REBEAT is all about. Now, we’re launching into a new medium: podcasting!
Now on iTunes, and wherever you currently get your podcasts, BC the Beatles (that’s “because the Beatles” in internet speak, of course) discusses the Beatles — everything about the Beatles. The podcast is co-hosted by REBEAT founder Allison Boron and associate editor Erika White, who are both champions of the second-generation Beatles fan experience and are regular panel moderators and participants at the Fest for Beatles Fans.
Beyond using the podcast as a platform to obsess about their favorite band, they’re excited to present a next-gen spin on legendary moments in the Fab Four’s career, using what we know today to frame and debate what happened then. As each episode goes live, we’ll create a corresponding post here on REBEAT so our readers can follow along with the songs, videos, images, and more that they discuss in each episode.
First up: a Paul McCartney-heavy hour about the rollout and announcement of his forthcoming album, Egypt Station, why it has weird ties to the Beatles’ history, and how the whole thing was reminiscent of the mysterious Percy Thrillington and his ode to Ram.
Check out the first episode below, and don’t forget to subscribe to BC the Beatles on iTunes, and follow the podcast on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
BC the Beatles: Episode #1 — Paul is Weird… And We Love It!
Check out links to videos, sites, photos, and more that we reference in our first episode. This is, of course, not an exhaustive list of everything we chat about — for that, you’ll have to listen!
Highlights from this week’s Beatles news:
- The Beatles’ entire catalog is now available on YouTube Music.
- Yellow Submarine is headed back to theaters for its 50th anniversary. Find showtimes near you here.
- The remixed and remastered White Album is a go for later this year. Check out REBEAT’s track-by-track analysis of the revamped Sgt. Pepper last year.
This week in Beatles history:
- John met Paul on July 6, 1957, at the Woolton Parish Church Garden Fete. We found proof that a recording of that fateful Quarrymen performance DOES exist!
- Ringo Starr was born on July 7, 1940. Happy birthday, Ringo! Check out all the events happening around the world to celebrate our favorite drummer’s big day.
Everything we know about Egypt Station… so far:
- We GUESSED THE TITLE (just saying) by sleuthing Paul McCartney’s social media posts and coming up with this painting from 1989.
- Listen to the first two tracks from Egypt Station: “Come on to Me” and “I Don’t Know.”
- Sadly (or maybe not so much), the “fake” “Come on to Me” and “I Don’t Know” videos we reference were removed from YouTube.
- The best 23-odd minutes of video ever: Paul on Carpool Karaoke.
- Paul’s releasing new tour dates bit by bit. See them all (so far) here.
- “Paul is Dead… Kiss Him, Kiss Him,” the first-ever article published on REBEAT and still the most popular. The comments section is gold.
- The 2002-2003 Driving USA tour DVD included a code to access a “secret show” online. Here’s the show and its quintessentially 2000s intro in all its glory.
- In 2013, Paul performed in Times Square as a promo for New. He also played a super-small show at Amoeba Music in San Francisco.
The mysterious case of Percy “Thrills” Thrillington:
- All about Thrillington, Percy’s weird orchestral tribute to Paul McCartney’s Ram.
- Percy Thrillington is on Twitter! Find his pics here along with the newspaper classifieds detailing this socialite’s every move.
Our highlights of the week:
- “Love Take Me Down to the Streets,” the “lost” Wings song from Role Models
- In 1968, 17-year-old American Leslie Samuels* visited George Harrison and the other Beatles at their homes. A few years ago, she appeared on Antiques Roadshow with a copy of John Lennon’s In His Own Write and a recording of Paul reading a poem from it along with a a photo. Check out our social media for the article about Leslie’s visit with George!
*In the episode, Allison incorrectly said Leslie’s last name was San Angelo. Turns out that’s where she’s from in Texas. Whoops.
