Bettye LaVette, dubbed on her website as “The Great Lady of Soul,” will be gracing City Winery in New York City with her talents on October 16. She is playing the latter of two shows slated for that date, with LaVette’s set beginning at 9:45 PM; her smoky, soulful voice coupled with the nighttime and the intimateness of the venue will surely make for an exceptional evening.
Betty Jo Haskins began making music at age 16, rechristening herself Betty LaVette and touring with artists such as Ben E. King, Clyde McPhatter, and then-newcomer Otis Redding. She has had a long and prolific career in music, releasing countless albums and singles beginning in the early 1960s and continuing onward to today.

LaVette released her latest album, Worthy, in January. The 11 songs that comprise the album were written by the likes of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney. Of the album, producer Joe Henry states, “With every song on Worthy, Bettye finds the thread that first will unravel it. Then she stitches it all back together until it fits her taut frame and fierce stride, until it bends to meet her, until each song’s story is somehow, miraculously, telling her own.” Worthy received rave reviews from Pop Matters, MOJO, All Music, and the Boston Globe, among others.
