Staff Picks: New Year’s Resolutions
It’s 2015, and, like most people, we REBEATers are kicking off the new year with new and good intentions, as we resolve to change our lives for the better. Hopefully our resolutions survive January and we can reflect on the wonderful results on December 31, 2015. For now, here are our best-laid plans.
Jim:
More writing, not just for REBEAT but a few other places as well. I’ve promised that I’d get this one up and out there, and damn it all, despite the delays and other obstacles, this will be going up soon.
Allison:
Making time for writing (not just editing and doing back-end and administrative stuff) on REBEAT is a priority. I also promised myself I’d pitch five new publications this year and am formulating some ideas for my first investigative/think pieces. Also, personally, I just want to focus on strengthening relationships with the wonderful people in my life and get back into running.
Erika:
My resolution is to write more — at REBEAT, my Beatles blog, and elsewhere — to learn more, and to move into a life filled with more authentic work and much less “Brummer Striving.” (“Brummer Striving” is John Lennon’s term for the jobs people have out of obligation but don’t want — a perfect phrase, if you ask me!) And most importantly, to make the sacrifices and do the work to make it happen.
Emma:
Obviously, everyone plans on writing more. That’s definitely something I’ve been wanting to promise myself. But in addition to that, my resolution is actually to plan ahead more. This means not waiting until the day I do my radio show to decide the theme, because that never works out anyway. It means actually pre-ordering all those albums I wanted, rather than waiting until they’ve been out a month and realizing I dropped the ball. And I guess better time management is something I’d like as well. Yeah.
Susan:
As others have said, definitely more writing — and hopefully better time management so I don’t have to extend deadlines or freak out when they get close! Going to more live shows (theatre and music), reading more books (music and otherwise), and spending more quality time with my family. And, most important of all, helping my son choose the perfect college!
Lindsay:
2015 is the year I turn 30 and while I’m not at all sad or upset about entering this new decade of my life, I’ve realized that I need to be more mindful of the moments — good and bad — that are making up my increasingly sped-up sojourns around the sun. So my sister-in-law and I both agreed to start a jar in which we write down the most memorable or happiest thing to happen to us every day of the year. On December 31, 2015 we’re going to open a bottle (or five) of our favorite wine and revisit the year that’s passed. It’s nothing incredible, but I think it’s a task-oriented goal that I can manage (since I suck so tremendously at resolutions).
Oh, yeah, and I guess to write? Because I’m sensing a theme here…
Sarah:
I’m conscious of how big a year 2015 is going to be for me as I finish my degree and hope to embark on a master’s. My resolution for this year is simply to take advantage of all the opportunities that come my way. This is what I did in 2014, and it was a success, so I want to repeat the formula and make the most of this year. In the past I’ve been too reluctant and too scared to go for the things I really want, so I’ve decided to step out of my comfort zone and take chances. I’m hoping 2015 will be a year filled with music, fun, and friendship.
